Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
