The English and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales will face off in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Draws

Ireland and Scotland also share a group together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
