No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
