British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
